Here's another insight in how I simplify a 3D model so it will make a better papercraft model (imho).

As you can see by the number of pink lines and dots, I usually get rid of a lot of the 3D detail.

This might seem as a shame to do, but think about it: in the 3D model, to create a smooth curve, you need to break down the curve into a lot of small straight lines, resulting in a lot of small polygons.

While with paper, you can just use one straight pace of paper and curve it all you like. That's how I try to simplify the 3D model: as if it isn't made from digital polygons, but from paper.

Another thing you can easily simplify are "double layers". Sometimes it looks better if you keep them (like I did with the armor pieces on Link's "man skirt", but take the head for example: [link]

Hmm.... simple.

Papercraft always is. ;o)

As a 3-D modeler myself, I know just how tedious a task this can be. But it pays off, both for papercraft - easier models to build - and game design - the less polygons, the better the frame rate. Good work as always :)

Thanks, you're right about it being very tedious work sometimes, I have to keep telling myself it's all worth it all the time as well! ;o)

Well at least most of the extra polygons are just there for animation purposes (knees and whatnot), so those must be the easier ones to clean up. I'd imagine cleaning up the smaller details to be the more heart breaking ones Dx

That's partially true I think; of course a lot of the details like lips, eyesockets, wrinkles in the clothing and stuff like that all require a lot of polygons to create, while they would be much too small to recreate in paper form at a "normal" scale.

But I also think a lot of the "extra" polygons are to make the curves look smoother; more sections mean a smoother curve.

But in paper, you can create any curve you want without having to divide it into sections first! ;o)

Hehe that's what the texture is for ;D And paper is a wondrous thing xD

Yeah, if you have a good texture, you won't even miss the 3D detail. I think it often looks much more "natural" instead of an overly detailed model crowded with small folds. But that's a personal preference of course. ;o)

What a pain.. nice one, maybe I will make one. I did your old Going Merry for my girlfriend a long time a go, and some Advance Wars tanks for myself... as for Zelda... maybe I'll make this one since it's a very cool looking Link.

BTW, I kept searching on the web for a specific papercraft but found none: A model based on Ganondorf from the Wind Waker version [link]
, I think it would be a very pretty model to do. Do you have any idea if it exists?

Maybe I should just try to make it on paperkura.. -_-

There is a WW Ganondorf bust on the ChokipetaKobo website ([link]) but it was an experimental work and is not available to the public...

That's the only one I know of for now, of course you could try to make one yourself! ;o)

Good luck and have fun!
