3D LEGO pirate captain WIP by ninjatoespapercraft 3D LEGO pirate captain WIP by ninjatoespapercraft
With his face, Kapitein Knoest looks less creepy, but more fearsome! ;o)

One has to wonder what happened to him, though: before the debut of LEGO Pirates, all the minifigs had clean, happy smileyfaces.

But for some reason, LEGO found it necessary to chop off Knoest's leg and hand, gouge out his eye, and give him a messy red beard...

And they wonder why he became a pirate...

Interestingly, though, despite the pirates being the first to use something other than the basic smiley face, they were all still smiling. Sometimes it was an evil grin with angry eyebrows, sure, but there was always that same classic smiley face underneath. It wasn't until Wild West in 1996 (I think it was '96, anyway) that there were minifigures with decidedly unhappy faces, or in fact any faces not based on the classic smiley face.

Great work with this guy! He's really looking like the real deal! Technically, his epaulettes ought to match his peg-leg (they were the same color really, even if there was sometimes a slight discoloration). But that's just me nitpicking.

You'd be smiling too if you were full of rum! ;o)

But of course LEGO still wanted kids to know that even though they pirates, they were happy pirates I guess. ;o)

You're right about the colours: I was experimenting with the colours (because what you see on screen is not the same colour as on the paper...)

In the final version, the epaulettes and the peg leg will be the same brown colour, and the arms and legs will be as black as the shirt (I made them a little lighter now so I could see the lines in SketchUp ;o)

At least he knows how to stay stylish. That's what I love about pirate captains.

Yes he does look very smart doesn't he? ;o) I've always thought he was one of the best looking LEGO minifigs!
