Laytoes' Puzzle 001

The Professor Layton games inspired me to come up with my own puzzle;

I made a paper model to go with it, but it's not necessary for solving the puzzle; and it's probably more challenging than the puzzle itself... ;o)

Update:
Many people have already come a very long way in solving hints 1 and 2 of the puzzle, but hint 3 has one more clue that most people haven't picked up yet...

But I think it's just a matter of keeping going until you find this final piece of the puzzle.

I will update the [link] soon with the complete solution, but I'll give other people the chance to try and solve it too first. ;o)
